The 1930s was a good decade for the advancement of African American musicians. As Swing became the dominant form of jazz that the public enjoyed all black big bands such as the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra began to flourish.

Swing was a style of jazz associated with dances such as the "Lindy Hop, " and the music itself was associated with an augmented rhythmic style that was given to the duration of notes.

In 1936, Benny Goodman made the decision to tour with a black pianist. The decision was very controversial, and it was the first time that a popular swing band integrated.

Popular artists of the era included Glenn Miller, Bing Crosby, Robert Johnson, and Duke Ellington.
